I am intrigued by reflection; literally as nature mirrored on water or symbolically as people on reflective surfaces. I am also interested in shadows and the relationship between the source of the shadow and what it is cast upon. My inspiration comes from observing and experiencing nature as it reflects and casts shadows. For me, shadows and reflections represent how one’s perceptions, both visually and cognitively, are distorted through an altered reality. This perceived reality is represented as the reflective surface causes the image to be bent or skewed.
Experimentation plays a huge role in my artwork. I often use a variety of techniques, approaches, and mediums to create imagery. This allows me to communicate certain emotions, meanings, or surface qualities. One way I achieve this is through a process of layering textures and colors so they visually mix to create other colors and patterns optically. This creates energy and vibrancy that contributes to the effect that light has on objects. I also use the woodcut process to represent the progression of distortion as I print on paper, print on top of paintings, and finally use the carved woodblock as a painting surface. Through this process my artwork itself becomes a reflection when the image is mirrored as it is printed. These layering approaches exemplify how reality is altered as it is manipulated
Shelly, WOW! I miss seeing this beautiful work. I hope you are still cranking it out.
